Special Education Teacher / Behavior Specialist/Mediator
Lisa is a certified Special Education teacher for students with emotional and behavioral disabilities. She completed her post-graduate education through UMaine Farmington. She co-designed a highly successful proactive program called MANTA at York High School dedicated as a “safe place" to help struggling students solve problems and build skills that help them to be more successful. She has worked in special education for over twenty years and, prior to this time, taught acting and improvisation skills to At-Risk kids for the Portland Boys and Girls Clubs of America.
Also trained in Transformative Mediation, Lisa is currently working toward a further certificate through Colorado State University in Conflict Resolution and Mediation with an eye to mediating folks using ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) in the court system and in private practice.
Lisa also is trained as a Community Facilitator in Restorative Justice with the Restorative Justice Project of Belfast, Maine and has completed additional training with RJ/Belfast in the nationwide Open Table project, welcoming those returning to community from the criminal justice system.
She and York High School spent a year under the tutelage of Dr. Ross Greene, who Lisa brought to York to lead staff in his CPS (Collaborative and Proactive Solutions) Model which places emphasis on the idea that “kids do well if they can and, if they are not doing well, something is getting in their way.” (Greene, R., Lost At School: Why Our Kids with Behavioral Challenges are Falling Through the Cracks and How We Can Help Them, 2008) Marrying those practices with her own version of “the voodoo she do ’ and her overarching concept of unconditional positive regard has been her "road in” to helping kids find their way.

"If anyone understands a soul in distress it is Lisa Stathoplos. In her gutsy new memoir Chimera, Stathoplos pulls no punches as she captures in raw and eloquent detail the reality of depression and anxiety. A teacher who gave her at-risk students her phone number (and answered at 2 a.m.), she also navigated the system as a mother and knows this harrowing territory inside and out. Her first-hand accounts are gut-wrenching (and at times richly humorous), yet we are left uplifted and inspired as her ultimate goal is understanding. The vagaries of love/marriage/divorce are also bravely tackled, as Lisa intimately describes her own heartrending journey through this rocky terrain. Heart and soul, wit and warmth, ring out loud and clear from every page. Chimera is a dynamic clarion call for compassion; and delivers the message triumphantly."
Valerie Kuhn Reid - Veteran Educator of Theatre and English and Author of Return to Forever, A Saga from a Sixties Suburb, soon to be released.
